McCoy's Barbershop

(ca. 1955)

In addition to the town’s post office, this building housed McCoy’s Barbershop, a longtime Pineville fixture operated by former mayor C. H “Bo” McCoy.

319 and 321 Main St., Pineville, NC, 28134

This two-unit building, built in 1955 on property owned by local entrepreneur W.A. “Willie” Yandell, once housed Pineville’s post office and the final location of McCoy’s Barbershop, a 62-year-old institution central to the social and political history of the Town of Pineville. The barbershop, located at 327 Main Street before relocating to 319 Main Street in 1955, is closely associated with C. H “Bo” McCoy (1903-1986), a prominent twentieth-century Pineville citizen and businessman who served as the town's mayor from the late 1930s to 1955.

McCoy’s shop offered a range of services, from shaves and haircuts to shoeshines and even showers. More importantly, the shop was a community gathering place for the men of Pineville, where they came to catch up on local news and talk politics. The popular McCoy was defeated in the 1955 mayoral race by local druggist R. C. Hair, who owned a popular soda shop and drug store on the opposite side of Main Street. But he was appointed mayor again in 1966 to finish a term vacated by then Mayor Hoyt Wigonton. As town council member and mayor, McCoy was instrumental in securing Pineville’s first water and sewer lines. One of his fondest memories was the 1968 visit of then-First Lady Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson to Pineville to dedicate the town’s James K. Polk memorial. McCoy is remembered as a kind, religious, and quiet man. His barbershop remained open until the early 1980s.

The adjoining store front, 321 Main Street, housed the town’s Post Office beginning in the 1960s. Following a brief stint as a real estate office in the late 1970s, this portion of the building has since housed a variety of retail operations, including a clock shop and hair salon.
